The local crew gets assigned to "growler" an S12 (Athearn). Here it comes out of the roundhouse on its way to work. Let's ride along.
First, we have to grab the PRR MS box, which is empty, to deliver to King Richard Brewery in the industrial area. We have to push it out because it's a facing point spur. While we are there, we'll pick up two cars from Gray's Freight Transfer.
After making the short trip, we spot the empty and then head back down the spur to go get the pickups from Grays.
Today we have an empty CB&Q gondola and an empty CB&Q box, both headed back to Chicago. The switch crew can add them to the quickly filling up run for tomorrow. The local crew is done and heads back. The remaining pick ups are in the Flats, where a local shortline will handle the duties. Here they come now down the street trackage.
After reversing down the other track, they pick up an empty B&O box headed to Pittsburgh and a PRR box laden with fasteners headed to KC. Things are pretty tight in the Flats and you have to dodge vehicles and people.
The shortline crew drops off the two cars and heads back to base. Now our switch crew goes back to work with the four cars just brought in.
Three of the four go on the track with tomorrow's Chicago run -- two terminate in Chicago and the other one will be interchanged with the CNW to finish its trip. The fourth car goes on the storage track for the nightly outbound to Pittsburgh. Here's what it looks like after we sort them.
All in all, it was a very light day in Cleveland. Very few deliveries and not much else going on. That's the way it is sometimes. The next train is the Cleveland to Chicago run. We'll hitch a ride with them and see if things are any busier in the Windy City. The switch crew will still need to tack on a cabin car to the end of the train, but until the return train from Chicago comes in, there's not much else to do.
